TAVARES — “No soup for you!” is one of the most iconic phrases from the old “Seinfeld” TV series.
But the Original SoupMan of New York delivered the opposite message recently in Lake County.
The popular Big Apple eatery made famous by Al Yeganeh —the inspiration for the “Soup Nazi” character on “Seinfeld” — recently sent a shipment of frozen soups to help feed families of Tavares Elementary School students.
According to the school district, the gesture came about because of basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal, who has made several appearances in Lake County since his retirement. O’Neal last year joined SoupMan Inc. as partner, brand champion and adviser.
A friend of O’Neal’s, Orange County sheriff’s Capt. Sandy Carpenter, and Carpenter’s assistant Jo Ann Taylor, helped hand out the soup to families in need, according to Leonora Rossodivito, family & school liaison at Tavares Elementary.
